Girl Next Door

a link above to a video i uploaded on YouTube to show different editing conventions.

Here are Conventions and Techniques i used my video.

Cross-cutting is a technique that has a motivation behind the cut, like to show two things that are happening at the same time.   for example when it shows the guy jumping in the swimming pool and then it shows a close up of him swimming
Jump-cutting
Combining of two shots that are similar, so the scenes jumps from one part of the scene to another, this can be used to speed up time and to draw attention.
Transitions
Cut – A cut is a basic transition where you cut from one scene to another. This is used to piece shots and scenes together.
Editing rhythm
its the tempo that a scene runs at. for example this is a party happy themed video meaning the tempo will be faster, but if it was a love scene the tempo will be slow.
 Cutting to soundtrack
Cutting to soundtrack is a simple technique that means the video cuts to the music.

The Miller and The Sweep
A quite funny video that became famous because of its simple concept. The millers and the sweep is a story about two men fighting front of a floar mill. The video was filmed by a static camera  and it was one of the first films to do this successfully. Also the 180 degree rule was shown in the video but it was hard for them to do. it was a silent short movie.

The Great Train Robbery
The Great Train Robbery is about a group of bandits that orginise a train hold-up, only to find a determined posse hot on their case. It was directed by Edwin Porter with a budget of around £150. You can see that the technology had advanced and equipment had gotton lighter. Plus this was one of the first films to use transitions in post production which was a big breakthrough. You can also see that shooting for edit was starting to be considered because they used a dummy

Birth of a Nation
This film is famous for being the first to use popular filming techniques such as eyeline match, tracking shots and flashbacks. Though this movie was difficult to make this was made in the silent movie era which meant no diegetic sound was produced.

Chroma key compositing is a technique for compositing two images together. This is revolutionary technique that has film & editing forever. It started in the 1930's however it was know as the blue screen. They were first used to create special effects for The Thief of Bagdad in 1940.

Psycho is about a young woman steals $40,000 from her employer's client, It was the first mainstream Hollywood film to include montage editing. However psycho is extremely famous for its "shower" scene where a masked man come in and stabs "Vera Miles". The technique is taken from the "Levashov Experiment. Once upon a time in the west
I found this film very technically amazing because its able to build suspense so effectively because of the accuracy of the sound design that captivates the audience. The changes in editing was more visible in this film because you can see that editing for mood changing was feeling evident. For example the saloon scene uses cuts from single body parts enhance mood.

First Non-Linear Editor
The first truly non-linear editor, the CMX 600, was introduced in 1971 by CMX Systems, a joint venture between CBS and Memorex. It recorded & played back black-and-white analogy video recorded in "skip-field" mode on modified disk pack drives the size of washing machines. These were commonly used to store about half an hour of data digitally on mainframe computers of the time. The 600 had a console with 2 monitors built in

JFK
about a New Orleans DA who discovers there's more to the Kennedy assassination than the official story. This film has entered history greats. Its the way the film is edited with the sound track that helps the suspense grow.

Transporting
Directed by Danny Boyle, there is scene in this film that has become editing genius as its almost life like. The sound is mixed down so well that we as the audience are indulged into it. Also its like te editing has a certain pace to it. As its starts slow and gradually builds up.reference

Editing over 50 years

Over 50 years the concept of video editing has changed a lot, now everything is possible but the world was not always like that.

Before editing they already altered things in theatre to make it more appealing, but then after the film industry started everyone was too afraid to do too much free editing like shot variation, and other points of views because they where scared it would confuse the audience. But after that they realized that adding all these techniques actually helped with telling the story and it also gave them the opportunity to tell more complex tales.

Earlier they used eyeliner match to cut between scenes or shots so the camera man would simply just stop filming and continue again after. This  allowed for some earlier special effects for example, the camera man stops the camera after detonating a magic puff of smoke in front of his actor, then begins rolling the camera again after the actor has left the stage, making it seem as if the actor has magically vanished.

Then came something called Montage was a way to put together a number of shots, fast or slow, in a way that pointed out a moral or an idea. In Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times (1936), a shot of a faceless, crowded group of men come out from a subway on their way to work and then its followed by a shot of a herd of sheep being led to slaughter. There is one black ram in the middle of the herd. We immediately cut back to Charlie coming out of the crowd.
